When Sarah Ellen Stricklin was born on February 4, 1861, in Wayne, Tennessee, her father, James, was 35, and her mother, Nancy, was 27. She married Henry Millard Neighbors on October 27, 1879, in Lutts, Tennessee. They had six children in 17 years. Her oldest child was James Levin Neighbors (1881-1958) who was my grandfather. She died on February 17, 1928, in Sparks, Oklahoma, at the age of 67.

Data from 1900 U.S. Census, note the transcription errors: Ellen was 39 in 1900, not 89, Uncle Ludy is listed as "Lucky" and the ages of the household members are not listed.










NOTE: In doing my research, I came across a note about Sarah Ellen's mother, Nancy Caroline Daniels Stricklin (1833-1915). Apparently Nancy could neither read nor write, and thought that "all girls needed to know were how to cord, cloth, knit socks, make soap and cook." It seems significant, therefore, that the  1900 and 1910  census data clearly indicates that Sarah Ellen COULD read and write. Good for you great great grandma Sarah Ellen. The same note indicated that Sarah Ellen's father, James Hiram Stricklin was a Justice of the Peace and a county commissioner for 20 years. The note doesn't say so, but I am guessing he could read and write just fine. Times have changed.
