Iva Mae Faughn Neighbors (1891 – 1958)
Iva Mae Faughn Neighbors (1891 – 1958)
Iva Mae Faughn was my grandmother, my father's (John Ledford Neighbors) mother. When Iva Mae faughn was born on December 1, 1891, in Springfield, Missouri, her father, George Washington Faughn, was 35, and her mother, Martha Francis Reynolds, was 27. She married my grandfather James Levin Neighbors on April 30, 1906, in Chandler, Oklahoma. They had 13 children in 24 years. She died on December 28, 1958, in Sparks, Oklahoma, at the age of 67.
Family Tree
John Ledford Neighbors (My father) was her oldest child. There was a 24 year span between John and her youngest child, Edgar Neighbors. All but two of Iva's children (Henry and Herbert Neighbors) survived to adulthood and had children of their own.

Birth of Sister
Her sister Ada Evelyn was born on April 2, 1894, when Iva Mae was 2 years old.
NOTE: In the 1940 census, Carl Faughn (Iva Mae's younger brother) was listed, under the "Race" category, as "Indian". This is the only solid documentation I have found, to date, to indicate the fact that the Faughn family had American Indian ancestors. This information is from an official document that I have a copy of. However, on the 1920, 1930 census and all other documentation that I can find including two draft registration cards, Carl Faughn is listed as white. Is this one document from 1940 in error? Did the person who provided the information for the 1940 census of this family give the wrong information? Was Carl Faughn identified as white on the other documentation because there was a stigma attached to being Indian in these times? Personally, I believe that this family story is true, that we DO have Indian blood and I'll keep searching for more documentation. One other person in the family, so far, has had and Ancestry DNA test. The test did not indicate American Indian ancestry but I am hoping that this only means she was too far removed in generations from Grandma Neighbors and I'm hoping that the dna sample I recently submitted to Ancestry dot com for analysis will indicate at least a small percentage of American Indian in my genes.
Birth of Sister
Her sister Annie was born on July 12, 1903, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, when Iva Mae was 11 years old.

Marriage
Iva Mae Faughn married James Levin Neighbors in Chandler, Oklahoma, on April 30, 1906, when she was *14 years old. NOTE: There is some discussion in the family about her age when she married. On her marriage certificate her father, George Faughn certified that she was 16 as of April, 1906. The 1910 census indicates that she was 20 years old. The 1920 census says she was 26. If you do the math on that, she only aged 6 years between the 1910 and 1920 census. The 1930 census says she was 38. The 1940 census says age 48 and the 1950 census says 58. The last three census ages are consistent, so I am guessing that they are correct. So, in 1900 she would have been 8 and in April 1906, at her wedding, she would have been 14, so I'm going with that. We may never know for sure.

Neighbors.. "Living close to the grandparents, we had a number of
sleepovers at grandma & grandpa's.
She was a great cook! Always
wore an apron. At night I would watch
her take her hair down, I swore as a kid, it hit the floor! The front porch was on a slope on one side
and we had a playhouse under the porch.
We were probably around 9 yrs old and one day she gave us this big
glass platter to play with! Then we
got to take it home. Once home with
it, my mom offered us a dime for it.
When I got married at 19, she ask me if I had a dime, then she handed
me the glass platter. It is probably
clear carnival glass, but I still have it.
Our grandparents were taken from us too soon, still remember the day
the sheriff parked in front of the house.
Once they sold the farm to Aunt Jackie, they moved to a small house in
Prague. Memories of staying there on
Halloween. I drove past what is left
of it when I visited Oklahoma this past September."
NOTE
Cherokee and
Choctaw Indian ancestry: Hard evidence of Iva Mae Faughn's Indian ancestry
has been difficult to locate. Anecdotal evidence exists; Iva Mae's mother was
Martha Frances and many who are searching her geneology say that in stories
passed down through the family that she was at least half Cherokee. Some say
that she had even more Indian blood with some Choctaw mixed in with the
Cherokee but, again, no documentation at this point. Dean Neighbors 3/09/2016.
