John Ledford Monroe Neighbors

John Ledford Monroe Neighbors

When John Ledford Monroe Neighbors was born on July 16, 1831, in Newberry, South Carolina, his father, also named John Neighbors, was 25 and his mother, Lucy, was 20. John L.M. was my 2nd great grandfather (great-great grandfather).

He married Frances Beuford Brown in 1851 and they had nine children together before her death in

I have seen John and his father listed on ancestry sites as John Ledford Monroe Senior and Junior or JLMN I and II but I am not sure this is correct, so I am listing the older man as just "John Neighbors" for now to avoid more confusion than already exists.

After the death of his first wife, John Married Georgia Anne Davis in January, 1889. The couple had 5 children.

Mother's marriage to James Leake 18 Dec. 1834. John was 3 years old.

There is anecdotal evidence (no paper documentation) that John Ledford Monroe Neighbors’ father, my 3x great grandfather, also named John Neighbours, was possibly a slave trader and was poisoned by one of his slaves in 1832, when John Ledford Monroe was one year old. After the senior John's death, his wife Lucy Beuford Wright, my 3x great grandmother, married a man named James Leake and the couple "took baby John L. M. over the mountains." Before they left, she and James Leake filed a lawsuit against the will of the elder John Neighbours stating that they didn't feel that they were getting what Lucy and baby John deserved. James Leake and Lucy along with her son John Ledford moved to Alabama and then to Mississippi. They had additional Leake children and were living in Mississippi when John's grandfather, James Nathan Neighbours, died finally leaving John his part of the inheritance. He used that inheritance to build a substantial house in Wayne CO., TN after his marriage to Frances Brown in the 1850s.
